More women are paying alimony after divorce

When you hear the word "alimony" you may think it means the money that a husband has to pay his ex-wife. In today's world that is not the case with more women with careers, alimony has taken on a new meaning.

According to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 56 percent of attorneys across the United States have seen an increase in mothers who pay child support in the last three years and 47 percent have noticed an increase in the number of women who pay alimony.

This trend shows that more women have careers and made a significant financial contribution while they were married and judges in divorce cases are taking notice. Women are now taking on more high-powered careers such as becoming a lawyer or doctor.

While women may be moving up the corporate ladder, divorce rates have remained stable with approximately half of all marriages ending in divorce in the United States. The rate has been between 46 and 53 percent for several decades.

The switch in gender in alimony payments is a trend that many women don't care for, but is part of the divorce process and essentially evens the playing field for men who may not make as much as their wives.

Ending a marriage is an emotional and complex process and the help of an experienced family law attorney can help you through it especially if you are in a high-asset divorce situation. An attorney understands the complexities of a divorce and will help you determine your options as well as resolve any disputes and protect your rights. Their goal is to get you the life you want after the divorce.
